FAQ

Things people
ask first.

Short, honest answers. If yours isn't here, write us: hi@9tenant.com

01How much does it cost?+
The app is free. Certified letters are $25 each. That covers USPS postage, printing, the envelope, return receipt, and tracking. You only pay when you actually send mail.
02How do I send a certified letter to my landlord?+
Write it in 9tenant, from a plain-English template or from scratch. We print it, mail it USPS Certified with tracking, and file the letter and receipt in your records. No printer, no post office line. How certified letters work
03My landlord won't return my security deposit. What can I do?+
Put your demand in writing and send it certified. If your unit is in Massachusetts, the law (MGL c. 186, § 15B) generally requires return within 30 days after your tenancy ends, and 9tenant tracks those deadlines and pre-fills the demand letter with the statutory wording. General information, not legal advice. Massachusetts deposit deadlines, explained
04How should I document my apartment when I move in?+
Walk every room before you unpack: photograph existing damage, test what a casual look misses (run the dishwasher a full cycle, pull the drawer under the oven, check behind the fridge), and keep it all timestamped. 9tenant’s walkthrough wizard prompts you room by room and files everything as records. The full move-in checklist
05Can my landlord see that I use this?+
They cannot find your account. They will, of course, see anything you choose to mail them. That's the point. The return address on certified mail is yours; we're not on the envelope.
06What about templates and letter wording?+
We include a small library of plain-English template starters for common situations like maintenance requests and follow-ups. They are starting points. You write the actual content, you sign your name, you mail it.
07Is this legal advice?+
No. 9tenant is a record-keeping and certified-mail tool. It helps you stay organized and put things in writing. Where we describe a law, we link the official source. For advice about your situation, talk to a lawyer or your local legal aid organization.
